Now, as being a 57 year old woman who grew up in an upper middle class family, this book was very interesting and thought provoking. I feel really bad that life is like that for so many of our young people. It was well written and I look forward to reading the rest of the series. Not to be able to sit on your front porch because of so many 'drive bys' I feel really bad for the people forced to live that way. I know it happens everywhere, every city , every state. I wish the boys in the hood instead of trying to protect their hood would join the service and protect the whole country but it's not like they are like citizen watch, they want control of the drugs, the woman etc.... I have not lived like that but I do have a heart and feel for the moms and families that have lost someone to a rival gang or by being an innocent bystander or just playing in their yard..... I usually know what to do when bad situations arise,,, but never had to deal with what this poor girl had to go through.. I'm hoping she gets great grades and gets a scholarship and can get a great job and move to a great neighborhood.... guess the next 2 books will tell me what happens.. this is not your fairy tale happy life story that most books I have read are about,,, this seems to be an accurate description of what it's like to live in the hood or the project.... so wish school would start early and help these kids and that parents would not be taking drugs and be more responsible but it is not my place to judge,,, My heart really does go out to the families living in scary gang riden neighborhoods.... Good job Niki showing us the real way a hell of a lot of people live. So sad that it really is like that for them...Product details

I only gave this book an okay because I did not like at all the way it ended. The book kept me riveted from beginning to end, mostly because I wanted to see how the "broken girl" ended up. I was rooting for something good to happen in her life and sadly, it never did! I can't even imagine living like this, however I hear and read about similar true stories all the time. I know many people live this life every day and the author almost made you feel like you were a part of the story. At times I was even afraid and would cringe. Excellent writing, however, but again, I really hated how it ended so abruptly! I am a "sucker" I guess for a happy ending!
I one clicked " A Broken Girl's Journey" when it was free and it sat on my kindle for a few days after that. I had nothing to read so I said, let me give this a shot. What I thought was going to be the typical girl in the hood type story turned out to be an excellent read that I didn't see coming.
Author Niki Jilvontae has penned a classic tale complete with wonderful character development, great pacing, and drama that will keep you turning the page. There were a few errors but nothing that took away from the book. Looking forward to reading pat two! 5 stars!

I only finished it because I started. This book sounds like another day in Memphis...All the cursing, fighting, killing, ugghh...Not a lot of real substance. This book is for a specific type of reader and I guess I wasn't it. Too many grammatical errors, not enough good plot. I gave it an additional star only because at the end, it did almost pick up, but not really. Get another book. There is no journey, this is a just a little girl who likes to fight and needs to grow up.
Love, loss, and pain is all Lakea seems to experience. Constantly tormented, abused, and neglected by the people put in place to protect her she becomes jaded and broken. Jeremy is the only true love who makes her whole-- but will he too be taken away from her too soon? Or will his former bad boy ties be dead forever? Lakea tries to piece together her life in any way she can but it seems like all the odds are against her. Will the dice ever roll in her favor?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the way the characters were developed. It was like their personalities floated right off the page and I could picture them in real life. The book was really structured and it did not feel chopped up-- I could easily follow the story line without being confused. Of course, as with many books, there were a few grammatical error but most of them are easy to overlook. This book is well worth the read and will take you on an emotional roller coaster.
Lakea was definitely a girl whom had seen so much early on in life, and the chaos and dysfunction that went on around her continuously. Lakea's mother Felicia is the depiction of what quite a few women experience growing up, a mother whom just didnt know the keys to being a parent, which showed in her lack of love and responsibility when it came to her daughter. One scene that makes you giggle for sure and pump your fist is the little altercation Lakea has with this character named Jermaine. lol... We as women sometimes deal with alot of disrespect from men, and we have let them know when they are out of line at times! I believe Lakea's Trials became her Triumphs,she had to go through some things to become a better person, and a better Woman. Great Read!

My Thoughts.....
I was truly left in awe in the way this author was able to present to the readers a story of a young girls' pain. The delivery of such details with descriptions that were off the chart ...well done. This is a urban fiction read that will be full of 'drama, pain, killings, murder, death and violence.' Will there be any survivors? I really felt for Lakea and her brothers. Will poor Lakea very get a break and get what she was searching for in her life...'unconditional love?' It seems like the one person she wanted love from ...only would Lakea ever get it from her? This will be one of those reads that you will think about long after the read and in the way it ended...a cliffhanger...there will be even more to come in this authors' next read of 'A Broken Girl's Journey 2.'
